Mothers Union

Mothers' Union

The Mothers’ Union is a world wide Christian organisation to which anyone – male, female, single, married, divorced, a parent or not – may belong as long as they have been baptised and support the aims and objectives.

It was founded by Mary Sumner in 1876 to support family life and now has 3.6 million members in 78 countries.

In our own branch we meet monthly in St. Margaret’s Church Centre with a service of worship with hymns followed by a speaker and refreshments. We undertake projects, some set by the Diocese, and some of our own. We try to keep abreast with problems facing families today and we also endeavour to be supportive of each other in family joys and sorrows.

Members know they belong to an organisation with a long tradition which has existed in our church for over a hundred years, but which is also an organisation that has developed and diversified to embrace the changes and challenges of today’s society. We regularly fundraise to support branches overseas for training in literacy, agriculture and child care and health issues, and for relief in areas of disaster.

Through fellowship, programmes, policy and prayer, Mothers’ Union members around the world change lives and bring Christ’s hope to people. Varied talks are given, including, for example, Poetry for Praise, Piety & Pleasure, Marriage, Flower Arranging and anecdotes

St. Margaret’s Mothers’ Union meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 2.30 p.m.

We asked our members what they thought was the most important aspect of Mothers' Union, here is what they had to say:

  • Working as a worldwide support group of marriage & family life
  • Good Christian fellowship
  • Talks about the work of M.U.
  • Friendship and company
  • Variety of its meetings and speakers
  • Meeting together
  • Even if not active, support for aims can be given through prayer and fundraising
  • Fellowship and helping all
  • The friendliness of all the ladies
  • Fellowship with other Christians
  • Supporting and encouraging marriage
  • We support each other in good times and bad – we pray together
  • Fellowship and fundraising – helping overseas branches

We extend a welcome to all new members.
