St. Margaret’s Church is looking for an organist and choir leader to take a full part in our worship.

The Organ

The pipe organ is a 3 manual plus pedal organ. It is regularly maintained, indeed it had a significant overhaul in 2018. The organ is more than capable of playing works like Widor’s Toccata.

The music library which is catalogued and maintained by volunteers

The choir

There is a small choir (currently comprising sopranos, alto and bass) who practise on Friday evenings (between 6pm and 7pm) and sing for the Sunday morning Sung Eucharist (10am) and evening services (6pm) which currently include a full Choral Evensong (for which our Assistant Organist plays and the post holder conducts) one Sunday a month.

A full catalogue of the choir music is available upon request.

Currently the church uses both Hymns Ancient and Modern (new Standard) and Mission Praise, but is open to the possibility of changing to another hymn book.

Key responsibilities:

  • Playing for the Sunday morning and Sunday evening services
  • Playing for special services, for example Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. A full, current, list is available if wanted as well as special occasional services.
  • To be the first choice to play for funerals and weddings at the church. If not available then the church will look to use the services of the Assistant Organist or another local organist.
  • To lead the choir practice
  • To take responsibility for the production of the monthly hymn list (which is available to choir members and on the church’s website) which includes the hymns chosen for each Sunday by the Rector and appropriate choral anthems (chosen by the post holder)
  • To complete the annual CCL return
  • Any other tasks reasonably requested by the Rector or churchwardens.

A full contract, based on that produced by the RSCM will be agreed with the successful applicant. These information sheets just outline the requirements or rewards.

A full, enhanced DBS will therefore be required of the successful applicant (the cost for this will be borne by St Margaret’s Church)

It is expected that the post holder will take 5 weeks holiday a year, which must exclude Christmas, Easter and St Margaret’s Sunday (approximately July 20th)

Payment for each service or practice is in accordance with the RSCM rates for a town church. Fees for weddings and funerals are paid in addition to this which in 2019 equate to

A fee of £135 for a wedding and for a funeral £95. Where a wedding is filmed (DVD / camcorder) a further fee of £135 is payable to the post holder. It has been agreed that the fees for weddings and funerals will remain the same for 3 years, after which an increase, dependent upon the rate of inflation, will be negotiated.

  • Subject to other commitments within the church, the organist (or …) may use the organ for free for teaching or to practise.
  • Permission for others to play the organ is only by the Rector or by the post holder.
