Baptisms at St Margaret’s Church
Baptism is one of the most significant moments in the Christian journey. Here at St Margaret’s Church, we are honoured to baptise babies, infants, children, and adults, welcoming each one into the family of God. Whether you are considering a baptism for an baby, child or adult, baptism marks the beginning of a life shaped by God’s grace and the fellowship of the Church.
The Meaning of Baptism
Baptism is a holy sacrament in which we:
-
Welcome a person into the family of God
-
Celebrate God’s grace and love
-
Commit to nurturing faith within the Christian community
-
Affirm the promises of Christ, who calls each of us by name
For babies and young children, baptism expresses the faith of parents and godparents, who promise to guide them in the way of Christ. For older children and adults, baptism is a personal declaration of faith and commitment.
Who May Be Baptised?
Here at St Margaret’s, we joyfully offer baptism to:
-
Babies and infants, brought by parents
-
Children, who may be ready to express their own understanding of faith
-
Adults, seeking to begin or renew their life in Christ
If you are unsure whether you or your child is ready, our ministry team are always happy to talk and offer guidance.
The Baptism Service
Baptisms at St Margaret’s usually take place:
-
At a separate service, usually straight after the main Sunday morning service, or at a slightly later time if more suitable to families (depending upon other church service commitments)
-
Sometimes we also offer baptisms as part of our main 10am Sung Eucharist Service.
During the baptism service, water is poured over the candidate as a sign of cleansing and new life, and they are blessed with the sign of the cross - the symbol of Christ’s love and sacrifice. The candidate also receives a candle which represents the receiving of God's light into their life.
Family, godparents and loved ones are warmly encouraged to attend and take part within the service.
Godparents and Sponsors
Godparents play a vital role in supporting the newly baptised in their Christian life. For infants and children, we ask that:
-
Godparents are themselves baptised to be able to act as Godparent. If the chosen Godparent is not already baptised we could offer a baptism for them as part of the same service.
-
Godparents are themselves willing to support the child in growing in their Christian faith
-
Godparents understand the promises they will make during the service
- Adults may choose sponsors who will accompany them on their journey of faith.
